MS: Eight More Horror Movies Directed by Pornographers

Lists are fun to read and write. That’s a fact. It’s been a hot minute since posting our last one, so here’s another. For the first half of this two-part series, click here. Let me know if you think of more!

The Driller Killer (1979)
Bronx native Abel Ferrara set out to replicate the success of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but ended up with something closer to Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver when he lensed The Driller Killer (I’m paraphrasing the back of the Cult Epics DVD here), one of the UK’s thirty-nine famously-banned “Video Nasties”. It’s usually referred to as his first full-length movie, but three years prior, he popped his film cherry with 9 lives of a Wet Pussy Cat, an unremarkable sexxer with plenty of drilling, but no killing. Read my review.

Blood Shack (1971)
Also known as The Chooper (not a typo), Incredibly Strange Creatures… director Ray Dennis Steckler’s Ed Wood-caliber Blood Shack is one of a handful of so-bad-it’s-bad horror ventures he threw together before transitioning (for the most part) to porn with Indian Lady, Sex Rink (a porno set in roller rink), Undressed to Kill (AKA The Sexorcist), Weekend Cowgirls, Debbie Does Las Vegas, the list goes on!

Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959)
Speaking of Ed Wood, the man, the legend himself, widely considered the worst director of all time (I can think of worse), threw his hat in the filth ring with Necromania, starring adult film veteran/Country Cuzzins‘ own Rene Bond. Probably won’t give you Wood.

Faceless (1987)
Before the mild acclaim of Faceless, a surgical horror flick many fans consider amongst his best, most competent work, highly-prolific (like, two-hundred+ movies to his name-prolific) sleaze auteur Jess Franco directed Spain’s first legal porno, Lillian, the Perverted Virgin.

Blood Feast (1963)
In 2012, a trio of Blood Feast director/exploitation messiah Herschell Gordon Lewis’ lost films were discovered, restored and released to home video for the first time by drive-in label Vinegar Syndrome. Among them was Black Love, Lewis’ sole porno, a faux-documentary aimed to uncover the secret world of black people sex (apparently different than white people sex), though, he still maintains his contribution was solely as cameraman, not director.

Hell of the Living Dead (1980)
Before settling into his niche of Italian zombie romps, unsanctioned sequels/remakes to United Statesian blockbusters and other low-grade sci-fi/horror/action/exploitation fare, Bruno Mattei made his directorial debut by shooting twenty minutes of hardcore inserts for the French release of Jess Franco’s women in prison flick 99 Women. Years later, he co-directed the XXX-rated Porno Holocaust with Joe D’Amato, but chose to remain uncredited.

A Night to Dismember (1983)
Nudie movie/sexploitation pioneer Doris Wishman made the jump to adult films in the mid-1970s with Satan Was a Lady and Come With Me My Love, though never admitted to being involved with either project. In fact, it’s been said that she walked off set during most of the penetration scenes. After that, she took a stab at the slasher genre with seldom-seen effort A Night to Dismember before taking an almost twenty-year hiatus from moviemaking.

Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
Danny Steinmann’s entry into arguably the biggest horror franchise of all time has long been considered the black sheep of the family, but hey, it’s better than most of the later sequels in my opinion, save Jason Goes to Hell. Surprisingly, Steinmann got his start with a cheery spanker in 1973 titled High Rise, featuring two of the genre’s, eh, biggest stars — Harry Reems and Jamie Gillis.
